Where does your State add up on the Fat Scale?

Man, as much as I say I hate working out at the gym, as soon as I get going – I really love it. I just LOVE working out. It’s those first five minutes that suck. It’s the little bits of “I don’t wanna go,” that I feel before putting on my gym clothes that slow me down! But, the excitement always hits me as soon as I start lacing up my shoes! I can’t wait to get to the gym and start sweating!

Does anyone else feel like this? That it’s hard sometimes to convince yourself to need to work out? You know you love it, you know you enjoy it – but just getting to the point where you’re doing it – that’s kind of a challenge. I think all people are lazy - even the super-fit – they just have an amazing DRIVE and MOTIVATION. You know what I think? I think people like Lance Armstrong are lazy – but, bike riding had just become such a habit - how does one function without it? (More …)

I’m a huge fan of the arch trainer. I’m actually not a huge fan of regular ellipticals. I’ve recently switched back to running after over a year on the arch trainer, let me tell you. Its amazing. I really hate rainy days when I don’t run outside. The time passes too fast when I run outside. Especially in cities. But if you gym as an arch trainer — TRY IT i’ve even turned my boyfriend onto them & he is an avid XC runner.

    Don’t grow up too fast.

I stumbled upon a blog today that I will not name. I read her Bio, and I was so, so sad after reading it. This girl is merely 20 years old, and seems so hurried, stressed and serious! She’s 20! SHE CAN’T EVEN LEGALLY DRINK FOR CHRISTS SAKE, yet she’s naming off a huge list of her “problems” and the “severe stresses” she faces when it comes to eating. She has grown up so fast. Where are the all-night girl parties? The beer drinking? The movie nights? The night of eating a Ben & Jerry’s after a break-up?

Severe stresses? What in the world could a 20 year old severely stress about? Is she losing her house? Her job? No, she’s worried about the extra piece of chocolate she ate today. (More …)

    • Vanessa (Last Night's Leftovers) 1:46 pm on July 29, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Even in our early 20s (or, in my case, starting at age 17), some of us face moving away from home, and making it on our own financially without parental support. Some stress has to be dealt with, and some of us are forced to grow up a little more quickly than others, but it can be a positive thing. I may have ended up my clubbing days early, but I’m willing to bet that I’ll own my own home before the age of 25 – and my career has taken off like nobody’s business!

I think you have to make the best of whatever life deals you, even if you don’t get to have the conventional 20-something experience.

      • Courtney 3:39 pm on July 29, 2009 Permalink | Reply

        Well my dear,

I have been on my own since I was 16. And no, I have not had any financial support, and have had to grow up very quickly, with the pressures of family breathing down my neck, not remembering that I’m only 18, have my own apartment, hold down a full time job and have a new car (loan.)

I’m 21 now, have paid off the car, am going to school full-time and have to live with roomies because I can’t afford living on my own. I am just sad to see the youth of today, even the more privelaged, grow up so quickly.

We on the other hand, do take on more responsibilities – but that doesn’t mean we need to race to be big, bad adults!

I’m very proud of your accomplishments. :)

Tags: happy hour, mcmenamins, too hot to do a damn thing, working at the gym, working out

Hey kids. I’m sitting at McMenamins currently, enjoying their free wi-fi, and about to order off the Happy Hour menu. This girl loves a little happy hour – cheap eats! I’m considering the Brewer’s Salad and the Hummus and Pita. That will cost me a whopping $4. I have this ridic headache, so I think I’ll pass on the beer.

Getting ready was a sick & sweaty affair this afternoon. No air conditioning sucks ROYALLY, guys. I kept wiping off beads of sweat as I was swiping on a little mascara. Nothing is going on this sweaty skin!

Sucks for everyone who has to look at my face today … ;)

Are you guys having a freaking awesome Tuesday or what?!

Tomorrow it is back to the grinder (aka the gym!) for this girl. I hate working out at the gym. It’s just not as enjoyable as a run outside in mother nature. Running on the treadmill, I start feeling like a rat. I start losing motivation. I start getting BORED. The hot weather is impossible to work out at home or outside. It was 8AM when I woke up, tangled in a web of soaked sheets … It was too hot to workout even then! I just have zero desire to work out at the gym. I’m not sure what it is – maybe since I work there? I feel like I’m going to work and not off to exercise? I feel like my boss is going to ask me to start vacuuming really quick while I’m in the middle of a Smith squat. (She’s done this, true story.) One of the (many) reasons I decided not to personal train at her gym, is because she makes trainers run the front desk AND train at the same time to reduce her cost. Can you imagine being one of the clients? “Oh, hold on, I need to answer the phone.” For reals?

Yes, can understand why I felt so compelled to get a new job?

UPDATE: the food just arrived. Holy smokes! All of this for FOUR BUCKS?! Do you guys have any radical joints that offer a sweet Happy Hour menu? Te amo!

So this is idea number one today for beating the heat. So far, so good! I’ll keep you posted on what else is in store!

    Caio!

What to do with your Life?

Some of you may know, I’m a college student. I’m a sophomore, almost a junior. The first two years of college are just the basic classes, so, since I didn’t know where I wanted to go to University, I decided to just do community college. Well, I’m still not sure what University I want to attend, what I want to major in, yet I’m so DONE with community college.

I’ve been able to take a lot of different classes, in a number of different fields. I know what subjects I do well in now and what subjects I do not do well in. I suffer in math and some of the sciences, like Chemistry. I excel in Creative Writing classes, Humanities, and Art. I’ve always know this, I was in Advanced Writing classes all through high school and a member of National Art Honor Society. (More …)

Dude!!! Art is the shizznat. I’m an art history major, so I feel your love. I just finished a year long drawing course (so hard but beautiful). I’ll be taking advanced photography in Paris this fall, probably the most wonderful opportunity a girl could be given. I’ll be taking my pops Rebel XT which is like the cheap(ish) fancy camera for a photo nerd like me.

    • Anna 11:47 pm on July 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Oh yes, and art history probably has nothing to do with what I will end up doing. In this economy.. psh. I’m working for the Cambridge Arts Council, which is in charge of all the community art & public art projects in my city. Totally not the type of thing i’ll probably end up doing, but why not explore the fields that really capture you the most in the moment!

    Without a camera …

I feel like my blog is seriously lacking! I hate just blabbing on about what I ate for the day – isn’t that a bit creepy? At least photos of food are delicious! I will try to re-create my day of meals for you with a cacophony of adventurous adjectives.

I was in a huge hurry this morning, and coffee was the only thing on my mind. I shoved a hat on my head upon waking, stuffed my keys in my purse and whizzed down three flights of stairs to my Jeep. I bounded (it’s not the smoothest ride) over to Roth’s and skidded into the coffee aisle. Mmm, the aromas of rich, bold beans creeped up my sleepy nostrils. Heaven. I threw some beans from Sisters Brewing Company into the grinder, the delicate churning and humming of the machine lulling me back to sleep … (More …)

As for nutritional yeast– put it on popcorn. it sound weird but it gives popcorn some protein & it tastes kinda like cheese. Also, I use it when I make dairy-free cheese-like dishes aka my amazing vegan eggplant parm. if you want the recipe give me a hollah.

    Grateful Journal 7/24

Gratitude is under-rated and under-utilised. Most of us focus on the things we want to achieve in life – the things we have not yet achieved – the things we do not yet have. We hanker after it, gripe about it, wish we had it, wonder when we will get it and scheme to achieve it. It is all well and good to have goals and to visual them and work towards them, but it is critically important to your happiness to take time to appreciate the things you do have and have already accomplished. And I used to keep a gratitude journal – seriously makes so much difference to take time and realize all you have. I so need to start back up. It was also nice to look back and re-read it, makes you smile to remember all the good stuff – small things even that you would otherwise forget about.

I believe that gratitude is the secret to happiness. My husband is a Viet Nam vet. I visited Viet Nam about 4 years ago, on a trip with 12 veterans, and it changed my life. I am grateful for running water and electricity and screens on the windows. I’m grateful for having more than enough to eat. Most of all, I’m grateful that my husband survived the war.

Hi Courtney! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend! Have you talk to the b/f yet?? Remember to be honest with him and don’t be afraid to ask for help. He’ll like it that you’re needing his help to make your life better. I’ve been meaning to ask you… what kind of running shoes do you wear?

      • Courtney 12:11 am on July 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

        Hey Shelia!

I haven’t yet – I’ve actually been doing some research, about how to approach the situation, you know? I’ve been reading that I don’t want to ask too much at once … That it’s easier to ask when you’re totally relaxed, and that you really ask it as a favor instead of making it sound like a chore … So, I’ve been trying to figure out how – to make chores for each of us to do on our day off so we can clean? I think that would be a good idea … I’m just not looking forward to his response, and to be honest, I’m pretty sure he will forget all about it, and it’s just going to turn me into the bad guy, as I’m always going to have to think of creative ways to ask him that aren’t demeaning or mean.

Ugh, living with men. If I have any single lady readers out here – stay that way, haha!

And I love, love, love my Mizuno Wave Rider 12’s. They’re for people with high arches that tend to put all of their weight on the outsides of their feet. Therefore causing extra knee pain! So these shoes have helped me tenfold.

These “very important meetings” I’ve been talking about and “wish me lucks” have all been in regards to my new job. :) Currently, I work the front desk at an all-women’s gym, and while I love the ladies and enjoy the perks (free membership) our hours have been scaled back tremendously in the sagging economy. First thing first, I loooove your new blog!
Second, congratulations in getting a new job! yay!
And you’re right, it’s going to be difficult managing the houseworks by yourself with your jobs and being a student. You will go crazy! I’m not working right now but I have full class load for summer. I’m having a hard time keeping up with the house because I have so much schoolwork to do. My husband and I talked before I started summer school. I was honest with him and told him that I’m going to need help around the house this summer. I can’t do it all and the help is needed. And being a good, loving, understanding husband that he is, he’s agreed to help me. I cook, he does the dishes. I do laundry, he puts it away. Don’t be afraid to ask your b/f to help you. You’re strong and can run for a loong time but you’re also human, you get tired,, stressed out, and you’re going to need help. I communicated my needs to my husband, he understood that it was a great need and he met it :) Do the same thing with your b/f. Communicate!

Also, I’m curious… what are you studying?

      • Courtney 8:44 pm on July 24, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Ok, communication. Hmm, I can do that! ;)

I’m an undecided major. For a while, it was nursing, then dental hygiene, then it was communications & P.R., now I’m just laying low until I go any further. I’m at the point where I need to be classes specialized towards my major ~ and have NO idea. The dismal economy is also not helping me, since all of my fresh college grad friends are still living at home …

Congrats! My husband does help me clean. We have divided the house into his rooms to clean and my rooms to clean. This is what we do as a weekly cleaning. Now when the house needs more, I’ll do the whole house and concentrate more on the rooms he usually cleans as his cleaning jobs aren’t as through as mine. But on a weekly basis he does do a good job at the visitor cleaning (i.e. if someone walked in and saw the room they would think we’re neat and clean people).

    R.I.P Digicam

So, while I was leaving for a very important meeting (more on that later), my poor Sony digicam fell out of my Coach and fell to sudden death, after crashing down three flights of treacherous stairs. I don’t know what was more painful, the sound of it bouncing on concrete, or hearing the little bits break off as it bounced?

[insert photo of broken camera here.]

After an important meeting, I celebrated a little with a pint of IPA and a garden burger at McMenamins rooftop bar. It was about 3:00, and the sun was bright, shining, and the lack of AC in my car was doing little to curb my appetite for a cool, refreshing beer. So, I just gave in. I took the bun off of my burger and had no dressing on my salad, this kind of compromise makes drinking my carbohydrates a little better. Remember, life is all about moderation.

I continued on to a little ice cream shop, where I asked for a kids scoop of sugar-free natural sorbet, as I walked off my meal and headed to the post office to pick up some mail. My jeans had arrived from Abercrombie. (They are a fail, as the wash is totally trashy. I will return them to the store ASAP.) (More …)

Go for a canon. Canons are really the best, even if they are a bit on the pricier end. They take the best pictures. Target is having a sale (at least in Boston) if there is one anywhere near you. I believe the camera on sale is normally like 230 but lowered down to $150. I’m getting a new cam too. So sad when these babies die. But thankfully my Am-ex card extends warranties by a year, especially if it wasn’t my fault (the sand did it…)
And peace cereal is amazing. So jealous you got such a good deal.
